“Know Beer” throughout May at Deschutes Public Library

Know Beer At last count, Deschutes County could be called home to no fewer than a dozen breweries. With roughly 160,000 people living in the region that means we have one of the highest brewery-to-resident ratios in the country, making “Central Oregon” synonymous with craft beer.

Deschutes Public Library is proud to present 14 talks, tastings and tours throughout the month of May that will give beer enthusiasts a chance to revel in the local craft beer scene. All programs are free and open to the adults who are at least 21 years of age. Three programs, as noted below, do require advance registration.

The Art of Home Brewing
Tony DeBone has been brewing beer for six years and in that time has never done the same thing twice. But he’s learned a lot about what it takes to make good ale at home. Tony will talk about brewing your own beer in five gallon batches using supplies available locally and will provide an introduction to extract brewing vs. all grain.

Brewery Tour: Silver Moon
When it opened in 2000, Silver Moon had a staff of one. Today they have a staff of ten and brew award-winning beers such as Snake Bite Porter and Dark Side Stout. Founder and owner Tyler Reichert will take you on a tour of their brewery and give you a behind-the-scenes look at how Silver Moon approaches the art of craft beer brewing.

Exploring the Central Oregon Beerscape
In a region of 160,000 people and more than two dozen breweries, Central Oregon has one of the highest brewery-to-resident ratios in the country, which, as a New York Times story reported, “points toward a thirsty population with discriminating palates.” But what is it about this region that has brewed up such a thriving beer landscape? Certified Cicerone (beer expert) and Worthy Brewing CEO Chris Hodge explores how Central Oregon became a craft beer Mecca, and he brings along a few of Worthy’s brews for tasting.

Know Beer: Phat Matt’s Tasting
Join Greg Anderson, VP of Operations with Phatt Matt’s Brewing Company, for a tasting and discussion about their beer. Phatt Matt’s beer is filled with the purity of Central Oregon and brewed with a chef's touch. Space is limited; registration is required. A Sour Investigation
Delve into U.S. and Belgian Flanders-style sour beers with Jeff Clawson, Pilot Plant/Brewery Manager and faculty member in the Department of Food Science and Technology at OSU, talks about the science of brewing and explores the similarities and differences in U.S. and Belgian Flanders style sour beers.

Brewery Tour: The Ale Apothecary
A rare opportunity to tour one of Bend’s newer and most unique breweries. The Ale Apothecary is a vintage-batch oak barrel brewery located in the mountain wild of deep west Bend. Brewery Tour: Worthy Brewing
A chance to tour Bend’s newest brewery, including the hop gardens. Worthy opened in February and hit the ground running as a production brewery with the capacity to brew 60,000 barrels. You’ll also get a look at the 3.5-barrel pilot brew system, where the Worthy brewers work on creating two to three unique beers a month.

Brewery Open House: Bend Brewing Co.
Bend Brewing Co., known locally as BBC, was established in 1995, making it one of Bend’s oldest breweries. Their HopHead Imperial IPA was a gold medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival. Join in for a behind-the-scenes look at BBC’s brewing facility, which pipes fresh beer directly from the tanks to the taps.

Beer, Barley and Beef
Local ranchers Rob Rastovich and Bob Borlen talk about their collaborative partnership that uses “beer water” to water fields and “beer mash” to feed cows. It's a great project that helps support sustainable ranching in Central Oregon!

The Alchemy of Glassware
Forget size. Shape matters. And not all beer glasses are created equal -- nor are they "one shape fits all." Find out from Lisa "Beer Goddess" Morrison why glassware is an important component and how aroma plays a key role in how your beer tastes. Morrison is host of Beer O'Clock Radio across Oregon on the Radio Northwest Network and author of Craft Beers of the Pacific Northwest. Beer and books available for sale. Participants must be 21 or older.

Beer 101 with Three Creeks Brewing

Brewery Open House: McMenamins Old St. Francis School
The old halls and grounds of the St. Francis School now house a brewery in what was once the basement lunchroom of the former Catholic school. The space has been transformed with elaborately decorated fermentation tanks. Brewer Mike White will be on hand for tours and Q&A.

Brewery Open House: 10 Barrel
Tour 10 Barrel’s brewing facility in an open house-style format. Show up anytime between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. for your tour of their 50-barrel brewhouse in east Bend. 10 Barrel’s award-winning brews include S1NIST0R Black Ale and Apocalypse IPA.

Talk and Tasting with Boneyard Beer
Join Boneyard brewmaster Tony Lawrence as he talks about his approach to brewing in the boneyard, where much of the equipment used was given a second life after being pulled from its use elsewhere. Though small and off the beaten track, Boneyard is no wallflower on the beer scene. Tony will talk beer and provide a tasting of Boneyard’s finest.

Talk and Tasting with Sunriver Brewing
Sunriver Brewing Company’s new brew master joins us at the Sunriver Area Library for a talk about the brewery’s approach to beer making. Sunriver Brewing opened its doors in 2012 and initially served a variety of local craft beers, but they soon began brewing their own. The tasting includes samples of their own creations.
