How Does Your Garden Grow?

Take advantage of a lifetime of gardening knowledge as Stephenson presents “Cold Climate Gardening: What, Where & When To Plant In South Deschutes County,” at the LaPine Public Library on April 6, 2005 at 6:00 p.m.

“Gardening in Central Oregon is a challenge,” says Linda Stephenson, owner of L&S Gardens in LaPine, “but the rewards are great.” Customers will only find Central Oregon hardy plants at Stephenson’s nursery. “Just because a store sells a plant doesn't mean it is suitable for this area,” emphasizes Stephenson. “The dramatic fluctuations in our temperatures make plant selection crucial. Plants that thrive in the Valley can’t tolerate Central Oregon.” She encourages gardeners to experiment and to seek alternatives to their favorite plants. For example, fruit lovers might have to forgo planting a pear tree and focus on either a strawberry or raspberry patch.

Stephenson’s program will highlight what works and what doesn’t in Central Oregon. She’ll have handouts and examples of some homegrown species. Her books will be available for sale and offered at a discount.

This program is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit Deschutes Public Library at www.dpls.us or call 312-1032.
