Café Libri celebrates the completion of the new lobby at the Bend Public Library on February 11 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. During this time, limited library services are available. This program is free and open to the public.

Café Libri is the result of the library district responding to public suggestions. Created to provide a place to meet and mingle and enjoy food and friends in a casual environment, Café Libri events are hosted once a month throughout the library district. Refreshments will be served and entertainment provided.

Following a national trend, the Bend Lobby Remodel has added a self service station as well a self pick up for holds.. According to Bend Library Co-Manager Lynne Mildenstein “Libraries across the nation are seeing the benefit of having customer service staff spend less time behind the desk checking out books, and spend more time assisting patrons find the materials and information they need.” Mildenstein explained the lobby remodel helps address the needs of the more than 1,000 people who use the Bend Library every day. “It expedites the customer's visit at the library, and makes better use of staff time. It's a win-win situation for all!"

Taking the library stage at the February lobby celebration is singer/songwriter David Bowers. As a “monster guitarist,” he employs dropped tunings and the syncopation of logging boot-heels and knuckles slapped into strings to achieve the visceral effect of a small band. Raised in a railroad shack outside of Ellensburg, Washington, Bowers grew up with no electricity or indoor plumbing. His steady diet of transistor radio country music inspired early musical adventures, and he left the safety of rural life to organize several rock and roll bands and performance art groups in Montana and Western Oregon. He in influenced by the music of Jeff Tweedy and Gillian Welch and his day job of restoring damaged ecosystems.
