The Deschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome Donna L. Cohen, for two programs titled “Mysterious Botswana: The #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and Life In Botswana,” at the Redmond Public Library on April 8 at 6:00 p.m.and the Bend Public Library Admin Conference Room on April 10 at 2:00 p.m. These programs are free and open to the public.
Cohen lived in Botswana from 1992-1994 where she was a teacher at the Molepolole College of Education (fans of the series of books by Alexander McCall Smith will recognize Molepolole College of Education as the same Molepolole in which Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni grew up). After returning from Africa she received a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of British Columbia. During her program, Cohen fills in the flavor of the places featured throughout the novels with artifacts, pictures, music and stories of her time in Botswana.
According to a 2003 interview on www.readersread.com, author Alexander McCall Smith was originally born in what is now Zimbabwe. Throughout his wildly popular #1Detective Agency series, Smith traces the adventures of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe. Precious, says Smith, is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Smith says that “Botswana is a very special country,” and that American readers respond to the values embodied, like respect for the rule of law and the power of individual freedom, in his characters. “I hope that readers will also see in these portrayals of Botswana some of the great traditional virtues in Africa—in particular, courtesy and a striking natural dignity.”
