Deschutes Public Library is pleased to announce Good Chair, Great Book, a monthly book group sponsored by the Library. July’s meeting is scheduled for July 11, at 12:00 noon in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library. Join a librarian and other community members for a discussion of Monique Truong’s Book of Salt.

Good Chair, Great Books hopes to expand on what many Central Oregonians already know … reading and discussing books together is fun. According to Adult Services Manager, Kevin Barclay, book clubs provide what popular culture does not: a place for community, dialogue and a shared quest for learning. Barclay states that Good Chair, Great Books provides people with an introduction to library resources as well as a good discussion about a great book. “People should expect a wonderful and dynamic discussion as well as the opportunity to learn more about library resources.” Barclay also states that libraries have always been involved in the “book club business,” providing patrons with information on a specific author, or book reviews. “We felt is was time to provide this information in an organized and entertaining fashion.”

Book of Salt by Monique Truong provides an insider’s view of the literary household of Alice B. Toklas and Gertrude Stein. An exile from his homeland, the Vietnamese narrator is hired by the literary duo as a cook. From his perspective as cook, Binh describes the daily routines of his employers as well as his own intriguing past. Like other famous novels where food is central to the plot, Book of Salt is a culinary and literary treat.
