Deschutes Public Library is pleased to host the monthly Second Sunday Readings on Sunday, August 14, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library. This event is free and open to the public.
The monthly readings are the result of the efforts of local writers and poets who felt the need to gather to share their work and their love of writing. Each month has a focus and a featured reader. The gatherings end with an open mic time where anyone willing can share original pieces.
Gary J. Whitehead, an award-winning poet from New York will be the featured reader. The author of two chapbooks, Whitehead has been awarded the New York Foundation of the Arts Individual Artist Grant in Poetry, and a Pearl Hogrefe Fellowship from Iowa State University. His verse is sharp with imagery, metaphor and music. Whitehead finds his subjects in the natural world and human nature, using time, family, love, work, spirituality, redemption and death to find what is beneath the surface. Whitehead works as a high school English teacher in New Jersey.
