Deschutes Public Library pleased to announce December’s Library Theater screening of the classic Holiday Inn on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Admin Conference Room at 507 NW Wall Street in Bend. This program is free and open to the public.
Filmed in 1942, Mark Sandrich’s, classic black and white WWII holiday musical stars Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. In the film, it’s crooner Crosby versus suave stepper Astaire as they both vie for the affections of beautiful Marjorie Reynolds. The backdrop of the film is an upstate Vermont supper club, owned by Crosby’s character, Jim Hanover and managed by Astaire’s character, Danny Reed. The inn is only open on holidays.
During the Holiday extravaganza that is the films finale, Crosby debuts the wildly popular holiday tune, “White Christmas.” It’s a common misconception that the famous Irving Berlin song made it’s debut in the film titled “White Christmas,” that was a remake of the original Crosby/Astaire film. Sandrich’s film received three Oscar nominations in 1942 and won for Best Original Song.
