Second Sunday Gathers To Celebrate Written Word

Deschutes Public Library is pleased to host the monthly Second Sunday Readings on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. This months reading will be in the Library Admin Conference Room at 507 NW Wall Street in Bend. This event is free and open to the public.

January’s guest reader, is Don Kunz. Kunz, Professor Emeritus of English and Film Studies at the University of Rhode Island, retired in 2004 after 36 years of service. During his career at URI he taught literature, film, and creative writing in addition to serving as Director of Graduate Studies in English, Director of the University Honors Program, and Coordinator of the Film Studies Program (which he helped create).

During Kunz’s writing career he has been a Contributing Editor to the journal Literature/Film Quarterly and a founding member of the Literature/Film Association. To date his published writing includes twenty academic articles on printed and filmed literature; a scholarly monograph on17th century British drama; a collection of essays on filmmaker Oliver Stone; over forty five poems; and thirteen short stories. Additionally, after graduating from the International Film and Television Workshops’ film school while on his final sabbatical leave, he wrote, directed, and produced a short fiction film as well as a documentary about Habitat for Humanity.

Kunz’s poetry has won awards from the Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum, Philomel, the Arizona Authors’ Association, Midwest Poetry Review, and the Oregon State Poetry Association. In 2003 his story “Synchromesh” won second place for fiction from the Rhode Island Writers’ Circle and in 2004 his story “A Parade on June 25th” was nominated by The Raven Chronicles for a Pushcart Prize.

Currently, Kunz is living in Bend and working primarily on fiction. During his reading Kunz will read the only published story which he has written about academic life, a comedy titled “The Final Week for Revolution.”
