Deschutes Public Library is pleased to announce Good Chair, Great Books, a monthly book group sponsored by the Library. The first meeting is scheduled for June 13, Sunriver Area Public Library. The discussion begins at 12:00 noon and is free and open to the public.
Good Chair, Great Books hopes to expand on what many Central Oregonians already know … reading and discussing books together is fun. It is the hope of the Library to give people who don’t currently belong to a book group a place to meet and talk about a selected title. The monthly meetings are scheduled to occur at branch libraries around the district, giving residents in all of Deschutes County to opportunity to participate. In addition to reading and talking about a great book, participants will also get a lesson in how to use library resources and help starting their own book group.
The first title in the series is This Boys Life by Tobias Wolff. This humorous memoir tells the tale of young Toby, who moves across the country with his docile mother who is seeking a better life. In order to rise above the troubles Toby encounters with the men in his mother’s life, he goes into “hiding,” moved by his sometimes perilous circumstances, to create a private, “better,” version of himself. Wolff paints objective portraits of the people in his memoir, including Toby’s mother, who falls again and again for tyrannical males. Playing a significant role in the memoir is Toby’s neurotic step-father, who seems bent on humiliating him. The story, although somber, it is also darkly funny and so artistically satisfying that most readers come away exhilarated rather than depressed.
