2007 Rising Star Winners to Read at Second Sunday

Winners of the 2007 Rising Star Creative Writing Competition will read a selection from their work at April's Second Sunday. This month's celebration of the written word will take place on Sunday, April 13th, at 3:00 pm in the Brooks Room of the Bend Public Library. This program is free and open to the public.

The Rising Star Writing Competition is part of the Nature of Words, an annual Central Oregon literary event which shocases acclaimed authors and poets whose writing deals primarily with the western landscape. The Rising Star competition attracts entries from more than 100 aspring young Northwest writers. Prizes are awarded in fiction, literary nonfiction and poetry in two age categories, 15-18 and 19-25.

Theresa Peoples, winner of the 15-18 literary nonfiction, poetry prize Michele deSilva, winner of the 19-25 poetry prize, and Jasmine Lane, who received Honorable Mention in the 15-18 fiction category will all be reading at this month's Second Sunday.

Submissions are currently being accepted for the fourth annual Rising Star Creative Writing Competition. Winners of the 2008 competition will be announced as part of the festival, scheduled for November 5-9, 2008 in Bend. The top winner in each category will receive $100, recognition at the awards ceremony, and a scholarship to one of The Nature of Words workshops in their writing genre.
