The Deschutes Public Library hosted its first World Café program and explored “Who Are We Becoming…The Changing Demographics of Central Oregon” on Thursday, May 29th, 2008. More than 25 local residents joined in this dynamic event and connected diverse perspectives, listened together for new insights, explored questions, and shared collective discoveries about this place we call home…Central Oregon.
Library Director Michael Gaston presented the results of a recent Deschutes County demographic study that was commissioned by the library. The second half of the evening consisted of small-group discussions facilitated by Andrea Dyer, who was pleased to see that “The participants felt their voice is a part of the collective understanding of the changes in Central Oregon and are inspired to continue the conversation beyond this gathering.”
The World Café is a unique process that has been used in business, education and community organization across the globe, and enhances our capacity to talk and think more deeply together about critical issues that face our communities. By engaging in conversations that matter, the mutual intelligence and wisdom of each participant can be accessed to discover new insights into questions or issues of importance in our community, and a sense of the whole becomes increasingly strong.
