Chef Rose Makena knew at a very early age that cooking was her passion. At eight, she discovered that cooking delicious meals was a means of keeping her from being lost in a crowded household of six children and by 10, she was watching cooking programs to get ideas for meals that she would prepare and sell to neighbors. Twenty years later she opened 12 O’Clock Tart, an online gourmet lunch delivery company in Bend, where fans of delicious food can get fresh, seasonally changing dishes delivered right to their office or homes. Her culinary education has taken her from the Western Culinary Institute-Les Cordon Bleu program in Portland, Oregon, where she graduated in the top 5% of her class, to the exclusive restaurants of Los Angles. Makena has also spent time in France, further refining her skills a both a sous and pastry chef
Chef Rose says that comfort food “warms your heart and soul, not just your belly.” She says that comfort foods make you smile on the inside and remind us of our childhood, holidays, friends and relatives. “They can make you want to snuggle up alone with a good book or have a good belly laugh belly with your grandmother!” During her presentation Chef Rose will demonstrating the preparation of some of her favorite comfort foods, including roasted butternut squash soup, chopped winter salad with blue cheese and pears and oven roasted fall fruits with ice cream for dessert.
Class size is limited to register, visit the library calendar web site at www.dpls.us or call 312-1032. People with disabilities needing accommodations (alternative formats, seating or auxiliary aides) should contact Liz at 312-1032.
