Celebrating its sixth year, “A Novel Idea” is trying something a little
different for its community read program in 2009. As part of a statewide
celebration to honor Oregon’s 150th birthday, the Deschutes Public Library
Foundation is partnering with the statewide Oregon Reads program to present
three books to Deschutes County residents.
This year’s main selection is the
nonfiction tome “

American Family,” by Eugene author Lauren Kessler, head of University of
Oregon’s graduate program in literary nonfiction. And, for the first time, the
festivities will include a children’s book, “
href="http://catalog.dpls.lib.or.us/record=b1124023">Apples to Oregon,” by Deborah
Hopkinson, and a young adult novel, “
href="http://catalog.dpls.lib.or.us/search/x?searchtype=t&searcharg=bat+6&SORT=D&searchscope=16&submit.x=0&submit.y=0&submit=Submit">Bat 6,” by Virginia Euwer Wolff. The three
books were selected by the statewide Oregon Reads committee and Deschutes Public
Library was given the honors to do the closing events for the state-wide
program.
