Deschutes Public Library is pleased to host a three part poetry workshop on Saturday, January 24 and 31 and February 7, 2009 from 10:15 – 1:15 in the Hutchinson Room of the Bend Public Library. The workshop will be led by local poet Judith H. Montgomery. The registration fee for the workshop is $60. Workshop space is limited to 10 participants.
Poems by Montgomery appear in Bellingham Review, Dogwood, and Northwest Review. Her chapbook, Passion, was awarded the 2000 Oregon Book Award. Red Jess, her first full length collection was published in 2006 and her latest collection, Pulse & Constellation was a finalist for the Finishing Line Press Chapbook Competition. She was the 2005-2006 Poet-in-Residence at Central Oregon Community College and this summer judged the New Women’s Voices chapbook competition.
During the workshop, participants will focus on ways to “jumpstart their poems. Montgomery says that looking at a poem in progress as a series of “stages, such as seeing, describing and connection through metaphor” can help bring a poem to the page. Participants will also look at select works of contemporary poets like Yusef Komunyakaa and Diane Lockward. The workshop is suitable for new as well as experienced poets.
