Deschutes Public Library is pleased to host the monthly Second Sunday Readings on Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. in Brooks Room at the Bend Public Library. This event is free and open to the public.

 

“Poets with reputations at the pinnacle of contemporary American poetry live in the Pacific Northwest,” says poet, teacher and editor of Poetry Northwest David Biespeil. Biespeil is the guest poet at the March Second Sunday. “Poets working in our own backyard continue to transcend the geographic and cultural landscape of the Northwest helping to keep poetry vital and vibrant and central to who we are.” During his presentation he will read from his own poetry as well as from other contemporary regional poets.

 

Biespiel was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1964 and grew up in Houston, Texas. He has degrees from Boston University and the University of Maryland.  A former NCAA scholarship diver who competed in the United States National Diving Championships, he continues to coach national, international and Olympic-caliber divers. He also has been a recipient of the Academy of American Poets Prize and the Individual Artist Award in Poetry from the Maryland Arts Council. His volumes of poetry include Shattering Air, Pilgrims and Beggars, Wild Civility and the soon to be released Book of Men and Women (all of which are available at the Deschutes Public Library). Among his honors are a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and the Stegner Fellowship.
