From Frieda Kahlo to Che Guevara, Latin America is full of cultural icons. As part of Hispanic Heritage Month at Deschutes Public Library, Stephanie Wood, from University of Oregon, explores the role Latin American icons play in their countries of origin as well as in our county. Wood presents on Saturday, October 3 at 2:00 pm at the Bend Public Library and on Sunday, October 4 at 1:30 pm at the Redmond Public Library. Both programs are free and open to the public
At most American universities, rarely does a day pass when you don't see a student wearing a likeness of "Che" Guevara's face and emblematic beret. Such Latin American revolutionary figures, plus soccer players, religious symbols, artists, and writers, among others, have captured national and international attention over the recent decades. During her presentation, Wood will put before you some familiar faces, interrogate their fame, and read their images against the grain to see how it is that we embrace them, consciously and unconsciously, and how they play in their homeland.
Wood is the Director, Wired Humanities Projects at the University of Oregon. She holds a doctorate in Latin American history from UCLA and has published several books, dozens of articles, and multiple electronic collections about Mexico. She will be teaching a course on Latin American icons at the University of Oregon in spring term, 2010.
