In February the Art Envy series will look at the French artist Henri Matisse.   Participants in this monthly workshop will enjoy a 20-minute presentation on the life and work of Matisse, and then get creative in a 45-minute collage workshop, inspired by the cutout collages of Matisse, taught by local artist Paula Bullwinkel. The workshop will take place at the Sunriver Area Public Library at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21st. No pre-registration is necessary for this workshop. Supplies are provided and this program is free and open to the public.

 

Henri Matisse was a French artist who was born in 1869 and died in 1954. He was known for his use of brilliant color, and became a leading figure in modern art. He is regarded, along with Picasso, as the greatest artist of the 20^thcentury. He was a master draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but excelled primarily as a painter. In 1930, following a surgery, he was confined to a wheelchair, and set about creating cut paper collages, which he called “painting with scissors” often on a very large scale. These collages demonstrated his extraordinary ability to bring his eye for color and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power. 

 

Local Bend artist Paula Bullwinkel has a master’s degree in art education with a minor in painting. She has participated in numerous one-woman and group shows in New York City and the East Coast area. For 18 years, she was a professional fashion and portrait photographer for Magazines in NYC and London. Paula believes artmaking is best approached with a willingness to take risks, and a keen attitude towards the enjoyment of invention.
