Paul McCartney: A Life

Posted By:  Liz Goodrich
Date Posted:  2/17/2010

Author Peter Ames CarlinJoin author Peter Ames Carlin for a look inside the life of iconic Paul McCartney at the Bend Public Library on February 27 at 3:00 pm. The presentation about McCartney is part of the Know More Biography series being offered at all library branches during the month of March. The presentation is free and open to the public.

In the recently published Paul McCartney: A Life, Carlin uses  recent interviews with friends and McCartney's former band mates from Wings as well as on new research to recount the life of McCartney, starting with his early love of music and ending with McCartney’s most recent solo album, Electric Arguments (2008). In between Carlin captures McCartney’s  first musical journeys  with John Lennon and the Quarrymen, his rise to fame as the “cute” Beatle, his breakup with the band, his marriage to Linda Eastman and her death, and his recent marital with Heather Mills. Carlin also includes the well-known story of the Beatles' demise and Paul's conflict with Yoko Ono. By the end of Carlin’s glowing biography, McCartney emerges as a brilliant musician who provided the creative direction for the Beatles, taught John Lennon how to play the guitar and continues to embrace new musical challenges for himself.

Along with being the author of the McCartney biography, Carlin is a roving cultural reporter for The Oregonian. He has been a senior writer for People magazine in New York, and has published his work in the New York Times Magazine, the Los Angeles Times Magazine, and Men’s Journal. He is also the author of Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson. These days, he can be found in Portland, often in the company of his wife and their three children.
