The Deschutes Public Library is proud to present a Second Sunday event featuring Portland writer
David Biespiel. This event will be held on
Sunday, March 14th, at the Bend Public Library in the Brooks Room at 2:00 p.m. An open mic will follow the reading. Second Sunday is free and open to the public.
Biespiel will be reading from his recently published work, The Book of Men and Women. His second collection of Northwest poetry, it has been named the Best Poetry of the Year for 2009 by The Poetry Foundation. Biespiel says, “Poets with reputations at the pinnacle of contemporary American poetry live in the Pacific Northwest,” and adds that “Poets working in our own backyard continue to transcend the geographic and cultural landscape of the Northwest helping to keep poetry vital and central to who we are.” The book includes a series of autobiographical poems that confront the frailties of love and desire with unflinching intimacy and gratitude.
Biespiel is also the author of Shattering Air and Wild Civility. He divides his time teaching time among Oregon State University; the Pacific Lutheran University; Wake Forest University in North Carolina; and at The Attic Writer’s Workshop in Portland, Oregon, where he is the director and writer-in-residence. He is editor of Poetry Northwest Magazine, and since 2002 the columnist on poetry for The Oregonian, making his the longest-running newspaper column on poetry in the country.
