Deschutes Public Library Foundation has announced
Rules of Civility, a novel by Amor Towles, as its pick for A Novel Idea ... Read Together.
In its ninth year, the community reading event kicks off April 14, with more than 20 cultural programs and related reading events, and culminates in early May with a visit by Towles, who will give three public presentations. All the events are free.
Set in the 1930s, “Rules of Civility” concerns a young woman navigating New York’s upper-crust society. Kirkus Reviews calls the book “an elegant, pithy performance by a first-time novelist who couldn’t seem more familiar with his characters or territory.” Publishers Weekly notes its “strong narrative, original characters and a voice influenced by Fitzgerald and Capote, but clearly true to itself.”
