Deschutes Public Library welcomes Simon Wray of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to the Downtown Bend, Sisters, and LaPine Public Libraries for a presentation called “The Good, The Bat, and the Ugly.” The programs are free and open to the public and part of the Deschutes Public Library Adult Summer Reading Program being offered throughout the county.

Do you know why bats hibernate? Or that there are serious threats to bat populations? During his presentation, Wray will cover bat basics as well as discuss the vital role they play in our local environment. He will also dispel common myths about bats and discuss how to attract bats to your yard.

Wray was born in England and moved to the United States in the late 1970’s.  He attended OIT and OSU receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Science in 1989.  Following collage, he worked in various associate research positions for OSU before accepting a job with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area near Eugene.  During the following 21 years, he has worked as a biologist in the Rogue Valley in southwest Oregon, and as an ODFW biologist liaison to the Oregon Department of Transportation assisting them with project design, construction, and infrastructure maintenance issues that directly affect our natural resources. Currently, Wray is the Conservation Biologist for the ODFW High Desert Region.
