What is it about the heroes from our American westerns that we find so appealing? Is it the hat? The badge? The swagger? Or is it something bigger that keeps them relevant year after year? Margaret Triplett, COCC instructor, offers insight into heroes and why we need them at the Redmond and East Bend Public Libraries as part of the Know Heroes series during the month of December. The presentations are free and open to the public.

Triplett, who has taught at COCC since 1993, shares her life-long love of heroes and villains of the Old West with students in her Pop Culture: American Western course. During her library presentations Triplett says “we’ll take a look at some of the well known and most loved cowboy heroes of film and literature.” She will also explain why heroes are important and why we need them. “Heroes personify the beliefs and values that define us.”

Triplett was born and educated in the heartland of the United States. She graduated from high school in Mansfield, Ohio and returned to her roots to complete her B.S. and M.A. in English at Iowa State University. Her love of language and desire to connect directly with people propelled her to complete her M.A. in Education with a Reading Specialization at California State University, Chico. Triplett and her husband live in Bend and are the proud parents of three wonderful dogs and a cat with attitude.
