Is there gold in them thar hills? There could be, and people in Central Oregon are increasingly intrigued by the idea of finding it. Television reality shows such as Gold Fever and Goldfathers have capitalized on a renewed interest in gold prospecting, and new stores have popped up in Central Oregon that focus on mining and prospecting equipment.

Throughout the month of January Deschutes Public Library gives the community new ways to “Know Money” in all its forms—including gold. “Real-life Buried Treasure: Panning and Detecting in Central Oregon” is just one of the many programs featured during this month-long exploration of money. In “Real-life Buried Treasure,” attendees will discover what’s hidden in Central Oregon with Les Berg, an expert in gold prospecting, metal detecting, treasure hunting, rock collecting and more. Les will cover the ins and outs of how a metal detector works and will give an interactive gold panning demonstration.

Les Berg is the co-owner of Jobe Wholesale, a leading world-wide supplier of gold prospecting, rock collecting and treasure hunting products. He also owns The Lifestyle Store, located in Bend, Oregon. Berg travels with the Gold Prospectors Association and teaches at seminars across the United States.

For more information about this or other library programs, please visit the library website at www.deschuteslibrary.org. People with disabilities needing accommodations (alternative formats, seating or auxiliary aides) should contact Tina at 541-312-1034.
