The CSI franchise of television series has made armchair crime scene investigators out of tens of thousands of people across the country. It’s rumored that even criminals pay close attention to the shows in an attempt to stay one step ahead of investigators. But real crime scene investigation is much more than something that can be done in the hour-long window of a television drama—it can be tedious and requires extensive training, large amounts of time and an abundant amount of patience.

From documenting the crime scene to collecting evidence, members of the community can now get an insider’s perspective on how real-life crime scene investigation is done—and how it differs from what they see on television—from Bend Police Officer Canyon Davis at the Downtown Bend Public Library. His presentation, “Central Oregon CSI,” is part of Deschutes Public Library’s “Know Clue” series of programs and is free and open to the public. In this hour-long presentation Officer Davis will share information, mild photos and lots of stories from his years spent investigating crime scenes.

Davis is a Community Service Officer with the Bend Police Department. He has been with the department for nearly 14 years and trains other community services officers, as well as patrol officers, in crime scene processing, photography and how to lift fingerprints. Before joining the Bend Police Department, Davis worked for the Oregon State Police, where he received specialized training as an evidence technician. Davis won the Bend Police Department’s distinguished service award in 2004 for helping bust a major drug dealer using only fingerprints.
