Would William Shakespeare approve of casting Leonardo DiCapprio as Romeo? Mel Gibson as Hamlet? Al Pacino as Shylock? Since the early days of cinema directors have reshaped Shakespeare’s plays in film, some successfully, some not so successfully. Regardless of their box office numbers movies based on the Bard’s plays keep getting made proving the enduring durability of Shakespeare. Screen two movies at Tin Pan Theater during the Know Shakespeare series at Deschutes Public Library. Free and open to the public. Concessions will be available for sale.

Prior to the screening of Hamlet on March 5 COCC Professor Steven Bidlake will provide a brief introduction to what is arguably Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. Imagine being the Prince of Denmark, returning home to find your father murdered and your mother remarrying the murderer, your uncle. This 1996 version stars and was directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Although not written by William Shakespeare, Shakespeare in Love provides an opportunity to get to know the people behind his theater and his stories. On March 19 COCC Professor Dorothy Leman introduces the 1999 Academy Award winning film that features a young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meeting his ideal woman and getting inspired to write one of his most famous plays.
