Know Shakespeare: Elizabethan Fast Food

Meat PieThe humble potpie was once the height of culinary style. During the Elizabethan era, chefs crafted these savory pastries for the royal households of France and England. But hand-held pies were popular among street vendors who could sell them as portable meals.

Deschutes Public Library invites the community to learn to make their own version of the savory hand-held pie as part of its “Know Shakespeare” month of programs. Ahja King—who has mastered all things domestic from raising pigs, sheep and chickens to canning 450 pounds of pears—will lead two classes on “Elizabethan Fast Food.” In these programs, King will show participants how to create a Cornish pasty, which includes vegetables, lean beef and pork all tucked into a pastry crust.
