Know Cultura Traditional Music and Instruments of Latin America

Freddy VilchesDeschutes Public Library is pleased to welcome Freddy Vilches, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies at Lewis & Clark College, for two performances at the East Bend and Sunriver Libraries as part of the Know Cultura series. Vilches will also be performing at COCC. All three programs are free and open to the public.

During his performance Vilches will explore the rich history of music and its different transformations in Latin America. Vilches will be joined by fellow musicians Adalberto Dominguez and Adrian Baxter. They will perform pieces from both the classical and popular repertoire using a variety of instruments.

Vilches joined the faculty of Lewis & Clark College as Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies in 2006. He received his Ph.D. in Romance Languages at the University of Oregon, specializing in Latin American Literature of the 20th and 21st Centuries. His principal research interests include Southern Cone literature, connections between literature and popular culture, Latin American testimonial writing, and detective fiction. His teaching experience covers all levels of language instruction and Latin American Literature, as well as an interdisciplinary course on Music in Latin American Cultures. He has published articles on Latin American poetry and fiction.
