Roller derby has changed over the past decade. Long gone are the days of over-the-top theatrics and overt violence. These days roller derby embraces the athletic principles of teamwork, skill and competition. With a national governing body (WFTDA) roller derby leagues have popped up all over the country.

Although skaters use clever names and adopt sometimes outrageous personas when they skate, derby should never be dismissed as purely for show. Endurance and agility are just two of the skills necessary to be a successful derby skater. According to April Witteveen, a.k.a. Dame Deviant, in addition to the athletic side of derby, joining LCRD provided an opportunity to meet other like-minded people. “Derby helped me meet great friends and play an unconventional sport that’s just as extreme as any other you see in Central Oregon.” Witteveen, who skates for Moulin Bruise, is a Community Librarian for DPL. “Derby is a full-contact game played with offensive and defensive strategies at the same time,” says Witteveen, which makes watching a derby bout exciting.
