Second Sunday with The Nature of Words: Featuring Emily Carr

Emily CarrThe Nature of Words and Deschutes Public Library will welcome Emily Carr to the Downtown Bend Library for November’s Second Sunday event. Carr is an award-winning poet and the director of the OSU-Cascades MFA in Creative Writing program. This special Second Sunday event follows the 2013 The Nature of Words Literary Festival, which takes place in Bend November 7–10. Carr will read from her work on November 10, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the Downtown Bend Library. The presentation is free and open to the public; an open mic follows Carr’s reading.

Emily Carr has been a finalist in seven national book contests, most notably The National Poetry Series 2011. Her second book of poetry, 13 Ways of Happily: Books 1 & 2, was the winner of the 2009 New Measures Poetry Prize. Another book of poetry, directions for flying, won the 2009 Furniture Press poetry prize. Carr received her Ph.D. from University of Calgary in 2010. She is the director of the low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program at OSU-Cascades in Bend, Oregon.

The Nature of Words was founded in 2005 to strengthen and support the literary arts and humanities in Oregon and the Northwest through community interaction with acclaimed authors and through creative writing programs for youth and adults.

The Deschutes Public Library serves more than 160,000 Deschutes County residents through libraries in Bend, La Pine, Redmond, Sisters, and Sunriver. Outreach services to senior centers, day care providers, and homebound residents are an integral part of the Library.
