Little Free Libraries (LFL) are cropping up all over Central Oregon. Want to be a part of the Little Free Library movement? Kathryn Olney and Jim Roberts will be at the East Bend Library to talk about how to get started as a Little Free Librarian. The presentation is free and open to the public and part of the Know DIY series.

According to Kathryn, an LFL is an easy way to bring neighbors together and create a community. “LFLs start conversations, encourage connections, and create a neighborhood center.” When Kathryn and Jim installed their LFL it quickly outgrew its space. “A neighbor built an annex for children's books. Then the neighbors on the next block built one. Then the folks on the other side of the park built one. There is likely another one being planned that I haven't even heard of yet,” said Kathryn. She adds that “anyone who wants to get to know their neighbors and who loves reading should have an LFL.”

Jim and Kathryn moved to Bend from Portland in 2011. She had seen Little Free Libraries in Portland, and had coveted one, so Jim built her one for Christmas 2012. “Jim had never built anything before and if he can build one, anyone can,” said Kathryn. They have one son, bees, a dog, and are part owners of a flock of chickens.
