Tesla and the Electric Age

Posted By:  Liz Goodrich

Would you challenge the entire world to change their electrical system because you invented something better? Would you work in a lab with millions of volts of electricity arcing through the air? Would you tackle projects deemed too ambitious by other scientists? Nikola Tesla, inventor, electrical engineer and futurist did all that and more. Join scientists from Bend Research for a closer look at the hundreds of inventions and patents credited to Tesla. The presentation is part of Deschutes Public Library’s “Literary Elements” Summer Reading Program. The program is free and open to the public.

According to Annie Muske-Dukes-Driggs of Bend Research, Tesla changed the way the world was powered and invented things decades ahead of his time. “The most common impression of Tesla seems to be that of an outsider who bitterly fought with Thomas Edison and who stood in a lab while arcs of electricity crackled above him. But that is just part of Tesla’s story.” Tesla has grabbed our attention. “Besides his importance to the scientific community, Tesla has appeared in everything from movies to video games to webcomics,” says Muske-Dukes-Driggs. He was interested in more than just electricity and motors. “He tackled any problem he found interesting,” says Muske-Dukes-Driggs. At Bend Research, Muske-Dukes-Driggs primarily works with a Transmission Electron Microscope, a device which uses many of the principles Tesla developed.
