On June 28, 1914, a young Serbian nationalist killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Tensions in the Balkans were on the rise and the assassination led to a series of events that exploded into the world’s first global conflict, known at the time as the “Great War.”

By the end the war in 1918 more than 20 million soldiers had lost their lives and 21 million more were wounded. Know WWI at Deschutes Public Library this August.
