A century ago in August of 1914, the assassination of the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire set in motion a chain of events that ignited the First World War. Join local historian Bob Boyd for a look at life on the Western Front as part of the Know WWI series of programs throughout the month of August at Deschutes Public Library.
Wednesday, August 6 • 1:00 p.m.Sunriver Library
Thursday, August 7 • 6:00 p.m.East Bend Library
“The conflict pulled millions of men from their farms, factories and families into a human catastrophe that by 1918 would result in the death of millions of soilderes and civilians,” says Boyd. “The collapse of empires during WWI altered the course of world history.” During his presentations Boyd will use images, quotes and his extensive collection of artifacts of the era to bring a human perspective to the experiences of soldiers on the Western Front. “The French and German soldiers on the Western Front represent the young men of an array of nationalities worldwide who fought and died in the conflict.”
