Celebrate local writers at the Downtown Bend Public Library at Second Sunday on August 14, 2016, at 2:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Local authors, representing a variety of genres including memoir, poetry and guide books, will read and share from their work. “Central Oregon has a deep and rich writing tradition and the Library is pleased to host an afternoon of local writers sharing their work,” said Community Relations Manager Chantal Strobel. Following the reading books will be available for sale.

Participating Authors

  • Nicole Meier
  • Molly Carroll
  • Lucas Alberg
  • Lorna Cahall
  • LeeAnn Kriegh
  • Larry Loudermilk
  • Kim Cooper Findling
  • Don Kunz
  • Curtis H. Tucker
  • Bill Gonce
  • Ringo Gene Hayden
  • Susan Pearson Nordby
  • Sandy Thompson

The featured writers were selected from a pool of applicants from around the county. “The Local Authors event remains popular. Deschutes Public Library is pleased to shine the spotlight on local authors at the August Second Sunday,” said Strobel. Second Sunday, Deschutes Public Library’s monthly celebration of the written word, has featured award-winning poets, fiction writers, memoirists and musicians. Each Second Sunday concludes with an open mic, providing the opportunity for individuals to get public reading experience and the opportunity to share their work with peers. “Second Sunday is a great way for writers to support one another and test out material in front of an audience,” said Strobel.

In addition to the Local Author Fair, the Library sponsors and hosts a variety of workshops and events designed to support local writers. Other Library efforts include:

  • The Author! Author! literary series brings best-selling and award-winning authors to Central Oregon to talk about their books and the craft of writing and creation. From Cheryl Strayed to Sherman Alexie, an amazing slate of authors has delighted and inspired the Central Oregon literary community.
  • Second Sunday, the Library’s monthly celebration of the written word, offers local writers the opportunity to hear from regionally recognized writers from across genres. An open mic follows the guest author’s presentation.
  • The monthly Teen Writing Group at the Downtown Bend Library provides young writers the space to explore their creativity and practice the art being a part of a writers group. The Teen Writing Group meets the third Friday of every month (except during the summer when our staff is focused on Summer Reading programming).
  • Monthly workshops led by local authors from a variety of genres, including memoir, food writing, travel writing and poetry, are offered. Upcoming workshops give writers the opportunity to explore spoken word poetry with local poet and musician Mosley Wotta, learn the basics of fiction writing with OSU-Cascades MFA graduates Mike and Irene Cooper and work with Ellen Santasiero to build on the memoirs from the Speak Memory sessions. All workshops required registration. Information is available at www.deschuteslibrary.org/calendar.
