Grow your child into a confident music maker!

Space is limited. Registration is required. This workshop is intended for children ages 0-5, and all children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Music Together-Central Oregon is an early childhood music and movement program for children ages 0-5 and the grownups who love them! The early childhood music curriculum has decades of research behind it, in both music education and child development. Our music classes help little ones develop their innate musicality and so much more! And because we know that young children learn best from the powerful role models in their lives, music classes show parents and caregivers how to help their children become confident music-makers just by having fun making music themselves.

About the Instructor: Ms. Stephanie grew up with music as a constant in her life. When she and her spouse started a family of their own, she was excited to share the joy of music with their kids, too. Stephanie heard about the Music Together program from a friend and was instantly hooked after the first class! She and her children completed the entire cycle of music collections, and the years of participating in the program have been impactful to the whole family. Watching her own children grow their basic music competence has been a joy filled with constant surprises. Stephanie is thrilled to share the joy and discovery of the Music Together program with more families throughout Central Oregon.

Join therapy rabbit Parsley for some coloring fun!

All children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Hop into the library and spend your day coloring and cuddling everyone's favorite garden animal: a rabbit! Both kids and adults can experience the stress relieving benefits and fun.

Parsley is a three-year-old lionhead rabbit. Ever since he was adopted, he's had a mellow personality and a natural inclination towards people. His owner, Sierra, decided this made him the perfect therapy animal and registered him through Pet Partners. He passed his test with flying colors and is so excited that he now gets to spend time at the local library.

Did you know a group of bunnies is called a fluffle? Sierra spends her time taking care of Parsley's fluffle as he has three other rabbit friends! When she's not cleaning the rabbit room, she can be found either teaching art at an elementary school or volunteering for the local bunny rescue Ember's Wildflower. *Elsa*

Create a collage with different mediums that explains what you know about yourself.

This workshop is inspired by the poem "What I Know About Penny Rooney" from the 2024 youth Novel Idea selection No Matter the Distance. Familiarity with the book is not required!

If you have or work with a child or adult that is neurodivergent and attending in-person programming is difficult or causes discomfort, please reach out to Erin at erinh@deschuteslibrary.org to request a take-home kit with instructions and materials. We will have a limited number of kits for neurodivergent children as well as autistic or neurodivergent adults that are interested in this program.

No Matter the Distance tells the story of Penny Rooney, who has cystic fibrosis, which means she has to do breathing treatments to help her lungs work. Some days, it seems like her CF is the only thing Penny knows about herself for sure. From her point of view, everyone around her can make sense of their place in the world. Then during spring break Penny spots something impossible in the creek behind her house: a dolphin, far from its home. As Penny’s CF worsens, she realizes that Rose needs to return to her pod to get better. Will Penny be able to help guide Rose back to the ocean, even if it means losing her friend?

Cindy Baldwin is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Where the Watermelons Grow, Beginners Welcome, The Stars of Whistling Ridge, and No Matter the Distance (a Junior Library Guild selection). She lives just outside Portland, Oregon, with her husband and daughter. *yani* *ani*

Learn how to create colorful, multi-layered, textural prints with Gelli plates!

Space is limited. Registration is required.

This workshop is intended for ages 10+. Children 10 and over may attend unaccompanied by a caregiver.

In this workshop, artist Anastasia Zielinski will guide students through the process of making Gelli plate monotype prints. We will explore the themes of this year’s A Novel Idea Youth Edition No Matter the Distance and use the visual imagery from the story to create unique, multi-layered, textural prints. (Familiarity with the book is not required to attend the workshop - come make art with us!)

Monotype printmaking is a special form of the medium where the artist creates one print, instead of multiples. It is a simple, fun process that encourages experimentation. Gelli plates allow artists to create layered prints using various textures, colors, and magazine images. See image below as an example.

Anastasia Zielinski is a multidisciplinary artist and arts educator. Her practice centers around painting, fiber-based collage, and installation art. She received her BFA with a minor in art history from Pratt institute (Brooklyn, NY 2005). Ms. Zielinski has shown her work nationally and internationally, creating site-specific installations for INSCAPE arts, Shunpike's Storefront Seattle, Spaceworks Tacoma, and CLAVO. Recent residencies include Casa Lü and eeeee, both located in Mexico City. She is featured in issue #40 of CREATE! Magazine. Anastasia is one of the 2023 recipients of the Jerry Goldstein Foundation award. Ms. Zielinski currently lives and works in Bend, Oregon.
