To honor the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the Deschutes Public Library and the Nancy R. Chandler Visiting Scholar Program are pleased to jointly present a film screening and discussion of “India: Defying The Crown” at the Redmond Public Library on February 21 at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be provided and this program is free and open to the public.

 

In early 1930, the Indian National Congress, led by Mohandas Gandhi, launched a campaign of civil disobedience against British colonial rule to gain India’s independence. Gandhi’s dedication to the cause inspired many and continues to provide a template for non violent protest. Karen Aylward of Central Oregon Community College, will lead a discussion following the film.

 

This film is part of a larger Emmy-winning documentary series called “A Force More Powerful” which explores one of the 20^th century’s important but least-understood stories—how nonviolent power has overcome oppression and authoritarian rule all over the world.
